A common HFC typically made by reacting trichloroethylene with hydrogen fluoride. The R134a HFC has similar thermodynamic properties to the R-12 but with insignificant ODP and a lower GWP. It is often used as the alternative for the significantly more harmful R-12, retro-kits are available to convert units originally destined for R-12.
While it is mainly used as a high temperature refrigerant for domestic refrigeration and car air conditioning it can also serve as a cleaning solvent and propellant for delivery of pharmaceuticals.
